A pro-President Trump political action committee (PAC) called Great American Alliance has put out an ad slamming former FBI Director James Comey ahead of Comey's highly-anticipated testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday (June 8th). The ad is running online now, and will air on CNN and Fox News on the same day as Comey's testimony.
The 30-second ad, called "Showboat," has a narrator charging that Comey, quote, "put politics over protecting America," and was, quote, "consumed with election meddling" as "terror attacks were on the rise." It ends with the the tagline, "James Comey: just another D.C. insider only in it for himself." After Trump fired Comey last month, he called him a "showboat" and a "grandstander."
Meanwhile, media reports said yesterday that in his testimony, Comey will describe his interactions with Trump, but will stop short of accusing him of trying to obstruct justice. CNN cited a source as saying Comey will present himself as a "fact witness" describing the interactions that made him uncomfortable enough to write down what had happened, but, quote, "will leave the legal analysis to others." Those interactions reportedly included Trump asking Comey to pledge his loyalty, and asking him to back off looking into Trump's short-lived national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as part of the Russia probe.
Comey will also reportedly say that he never assured Trump he wasn't under investigation, disputing Trump's claim that Comey had told him that three times.
