President Donald Trump is reacting to the shocking death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Trump ran against Graham and several other high profile Republicans in the 2016 GOP primary. Graham would later become a key Trump ally.
Graham’s office put out the following statement.
“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness," his office said.
Graham was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and won reelection three times. He was seeking a fifth Senate term after winning the Republican primary last month. Prior to that Graham was a longtime member of the US House of Representatives.
Graham was 71 years old and had recently returned from a trip to Europe, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
