As President Trump returns from a NATO summit in Turkey, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker is calling out the alliance’s failure to back up the United States in Iran.
Multiple NATO nations, including Spain and Italy, failed to help the United States in the early days of the conflict, even denying the U.S. military access to their bases.
This follows years of President Trump calling out NATO nations for failing to adhere to defense spending requirements, something that appears to finally be turning around.
According to Whitaker, Europe was “asleep at the wheel,” and President Trump is now fixing that.
He told Fox News that some are finally lending a hand in the Strait of Hormuz. "We had a lot of allies that are willing to send what they have. A lot of it is mine sweeping capabilities. Obviously we have a couple of allies that do have significant navies and maritime assets, and those are in the region.
