Families Of July Flooding Victims At Camp Mystic File Lawsuits Against Camp

The families of six campers and two counselors who died during the July 4th flooding at Camp Mystic have filed lawsuits against the camp.

The flooding in Central Texas killed 27 people at the camp. The two separate lawsuits claim negligence and wrongful death. Specifically, tone of the lawsuits claims Camp Mystic knew of the flooding risks and did not properly inform parents, and that the deaths were preventable. It also says the camp did not have an adequate emergency preparedness plan.

Another suit outlines three instances in the last century in which flooding at the camp prompted evacuations, damaged buildings, or swept away belongings and vehicles.

Both suits claim that Camp Mystic leveraged FEMA into removing some of the camp's buildings from the 100-year flood designation.

Each lawsuit is seeking $1 million under Texas' Wrongful Death Act.
