Country star Toby Keith dies at 62

Country music star Toby Keith has died of stomach cancer at the age of 62.

His family released a statement early Tuesday morning:

"Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time."

Keith, born Toby Keith Covel on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, rose to prominence in the early 1990s, quickly becoming one of country music's most influential and recognizable figures. His debut single, "Should've Been a Cowboy," released in 1993, catapulted him to fame, topping the country charts and becoming one of the most-played country songs of the decade. This marked the beginning of a career that would span over three decades, characterized by a blend of traditional country music themes and a rock-tinged sound that appealed to a wide audience.

Keith's music often celebrated the rural lifestyle, love, and patriotism, but he was not afraid to tackle controversial topics or express his political views, most notably in songs like "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" and "American Soldier." These tracks, especially post-September 11, resonated with many Americans, bolstering his popularity.

Throughout his career, Toby Keith released more than 20 studio albums, several compilation albums, and numerous chart-topping singles. His accolades include awards from the Academy of Country Music (ACM), Country Music Association (CMA), and American Music Awards (AMAs), highlighting his impact on the genre. Beyond his music, Keith was known for his entrepreneurship, notably founding the successful restaurant chain "Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill."

In addition to his music and business ventures, Keith was deeply involved in philanthropy, particularly with his support for children with cancer through the Toby Keith Foundation and the establishment of the OK Kids Korral, a cost-free home for families of children undergoing cancer treatment.

Keith's announcement in 2021 that he was battling stomach cancer shocked fans and the music industry. Despite his diagnosis, he continued to make music and perform when his health allowed, showing the resilience and "grace and courage" that his family highlighted in their statement about his passing.

Toby Keith's death marks the end of an era for country music, but his legacy is enduring. With his distinctive voice, memorable lyrics, and contributions to both music and the community, Toby Keith leaves behind a lasting impact that will continue to influence the genre and his fans for generations to come.
