I was seven years old on the night of April 4, 1968.
I remember being mesmerized by the man on the television screen in our San Antonio home.
He had just been assassinated. And in my young mind, I understood not only the horror of someone shooting him, but the profundity of the loss to the rest of us.
The television coverage kept replaying his final speech from the night before.
I watched it again and again and again.
And the final words were emblazoned upon my memory and consciousness for the rest of my life...
"Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop.
And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over.
And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!
And so I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man!
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!"
Today, we remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a visionary leader who transformed the landscape of American civil rights and left an indelible mark on our culture and the world.
Dr. King's profound words and peaceful activism ignited a movement for equality and justice, reshaping a significant portion of our society's fabric.
🌐 His legacy goes beyond speeches and marches - it lives in the everyday actions we take towards building a more inclusive and compassionate world. It's a reminder that each one of us has the power to effect change and uphold the values of equality, dignity, and respect.
👐 On this MLK Day, let's pledge to carry forward his message - not just in words, but through our actions. Let's volunteer, educate, and engage in conversations that bridge divides. Let's be the change-makers Dr. King envisioned.
