Merriam-Webster is choosing "gaslighting" as its word of the year. The publishing company cited a rise in the word's usage over the past several years as misinformation and conspiracy theories pop up on the internet. Gaslighting is defined both as the "psychological manipulation of a person" and the "act or practice of grossly misleading someone." Merriam-Webster described it as a "word for our time." Some honorable mentions that made it onto the top ten list include omicron, oligarch, and codify.
