National Guard Troops In D.C. Sickened By Tainted Food From Contractor

Some 50 National Guard troops brought to the US Capitol have been treated after eating contaminated food served to them by a military contractor.

They've reportedly been served meat that is undercooked, moldy bread and items that contain metal shavings and feathers.

Detroit’s WXYZ-TV reports that a whistleblower has come forward to expose the problems with the food that Michigan National Guard troops are being served.

Some 75 meals were thrown out on Sunday after metal shavings were found, other meals showed up undercooked meat that made soldiers sick.

A staff sergeant with the Michigan National Guard tells WXYZ-TV says that problem is not isolated.

He says, “yesterday, for instance, there were 74 different meals found with raw beef in them. Just yesterday, the lunches were, soldiers had found metal shavings in their food.”

Fourteen members of Congress wrote a letter to the chief of the National Guard Bureau calling the situation “completely unacceptable.

They write in that letter “the members of the National Guard have served honorably throughout the duration of this operation. We must never turn our backs on our soldiers, especially as they have demonstrated time and time again that haven’t turned our backs on us.

Military.com reports that the Pentagon contractor serving the tainted food is Sardi's Catering in College Park, Maryland.

And they report that the National Guard:

“ will stick with its current food contractor after calls from more than a dozen lawmakers to sever ties following reports of undercooked food, laced with metal shavings and worms, being fed to troops defending the U.S. Capitol...
To feed the thousands of troops on the D.C. mission, the Guard awarded an $11.5 million contract to Sardi's Catering in College Park, Maryland, according to Maj. Matt Murphy, a Guard spokesman. But now there are 5,200 Guardsmen in D.C., versus 26,000 at the mission's peak. Murphy said the Guard is continuing with the contract...
The Army's top enlisted leader called the food quality "unacceptable" and said the Guard has designated more staff for food inspection."

Time for Congress to end this silly exploitation of the troops for a photo-op. Let them all go home, take down the fences and end all this theatrics.
