In an experiment that a Slate writer suggests could be the future of sports, an Indoor Football League team is experimenting with having the fans digitally call the plays by using their smartphones. The Salt Lake Screaming Eagles are the newest franchise in the 10-team IFL, and they've started an experiment this season in interactive football. Fans vote on plays using the teams' mobile app from diagrammed play selections, choosing only offensive plays since there's not enough time to allow voting for defensive plays. The play with the most votes is transmitted to the head coach, who then calls the play to the quarterback. The interactive team is the idea of Screaming Eagles majority owner Sohrob Farudi, who is so committed to it that he had fans choose everything, including where the team would be located -- Salt Lake City beat out Oklahoma City -- what the team would be called, and even the head coach, who was voted on after resumes and some interviews were uploaded to YouTube, and some of the players on the roster. Farudi and his partners have already bought another IFL team and plan to make it the second fan-run team before the end of the season, and Farudi thinks he can convince every IFL team to switch to being fan-run next year, changing the IFL to mean Interactive Football League.
