1 Trump Pauses Tariffs After Canada And Mexico Pledge To Improve Border Enforcement

Another eventful 24-hours ended on a more positive note. After speaking with both Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President Donald Trump reached agreements to pause the implementation of tariffs yesterday. After what she described as “a good conversation” with President Trump, President Sheinbaum announced that tariffs had been paused, and that Mexico will deploy 10-thousand National Guard members to the northern border to combat drug trafficking. Later in the day, PM Trudeau had his own conversation with Trump, then announced that tariffs would be paused between Canada and the US “while we work together.” Trudeau said his government would name a fentanyl czar, list Mexican cartels as terrorist groups, and launch what he called a “Canada-US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering.” There’s still one tariff that’s in effect. On Saturday, President Trump directed that a 10-percent tariff be put into place on Chinese imports starting at midnight last night. While there were no discussions between the countries’ two leaders before the deadline, Trump said yesterday he plans to talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the next few days. The tariffs on Chinese goods went into effect as planned.

2 Crews Began Lifting Wreckage From Potomac River Yesterday

Crews continued to work in the Potomac River next to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, with work starting yesterday on removing the wreckage of American Airline Flight 5342 and the military Black Hawk helicopter from the water. The salvage operation got underway at dawn, and by noon the fuselage of the airplane and one of its engines had been lifted out. Yesterday afternoon, crews started lifting a wing of the plane out of the river. The pieces were placed on a flatbed trailer to be taken to a hangar today to be examined by investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board. Col. Francis Pera of the US Army Corps of Engineers said that the major goal for today’s continuation of the recovery is to bring the cockpit of the plane to the surface. Work stopped several times yesterday to allow multiple sets of remains to be recovered from the wreckage, which were taken to the medical examiner for identification.

3 USAID To Be Merged With State Department

Three US officials told “CBS News” yesterday that the United States Agency for International Development will be merged into the State Department and see significant cuts to its workforce. President Donald Trump made Secretary of State Marco Rubio the acting administrator of USAID yesterday. Speaking to the press in El Salvador yesterday, Rubio said USAID had decided “that they’re somehow a global charity.” President Trump said Sunday that the agency was “run by a bunch of radical lunatics.” Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency has been given access to USAID records, and said in an X space that the agency isn’t an apple with a worm, but “is a ball of worms.” Democratic leaders are strongly protesting Musk’s involvement in the investigation.
