1 Death Toll In Los Angeles Fires Now At 27
The death toll from the wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles has now risen to 27, with 17 from the Eaton Fire and 10 attributed to the Palisades Fire by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office. The Palisades Fire is now at 22-percent containment, while the Eaton Fire is at 55-percent containment. The red flag warning expired for the area yesterday afternoon, which experts say decreases the risk of fires. Even with the red flag warning expiring, Sheriff Robert Luna said yesterday that residents who were forced to evacuate are still “probably at least a week out” from being allowed to return to their homes.
2 SpaceX's Starship Breaks Up Midflight In Latest Test
SpaceX conducted the seventh test flight of its Starship space vehicle yesterday, and the upper stage disintegrated over the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Later yesterday, Elon Musk said, “Preliminary indication is that we had an oxygen/fuel leak in the cavity above the ship engine firewall that was large enough to build pressure in excess of the vent capacity.” There was a positive part of the experience, aside from the lessons learned; for the second time, the booster rocket guided itself to a landing on its launch rack, which used two arms to catch the rocket as it landed.
3 Supreme Court May Announce Opinions This Morning, TikTok Ban Looming On Sunday
The Supreme Court said yesterday that it may announce opinions this morning, but didn’t say what cases might be decided. It’s the last day the court could weigh in on the TikTok ban law that’s set to go into effect on Sunday, which would penalize US app stores and hosting services if they don’t cut off TikTok on Sunday. However, yesterday was filled with plot twists in the case, including an announcement from President Joe Biden that his administration wouldn’t enforce the law, and would leave it to the incoming Trump administration to deal with it. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to save TikTok from the ban, mentioning using an executive order to delay the law. It’s not clear what options Trump has to stop the law, which was passed by Congress with bipartisan support. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said yesterday he supports delaying the deadline for TikTok to sell or be banned. TikTok has said that the app will go dark on Sunday if the law isn’t delayed or blocked.
