1 President Biden Gives Farewell Address, Ceasefire Announced Between Israel And Hamas

President Joe Biden started his farewell address to the nation last night talking about the cease-fire deal reached between Israel and Hamas. Biden had announced the deal earlier yesterday, which will end 15 months of fighting in the Gaza Strip and secure the release of 33 hostages in exchange for 100 Palestinian prisoners with life sentences. Israel will also release 1-thousand Palestinian prisoners not involved in the October 7th attack. President-elect Donald Trump claimed some of the credit for the deal; Trump pledged last month that if hostages weren’t released by his inauguration on Monday, “all hell will break out.” His Mideast envoy, Steve Witkoff, joined the talks that reached the deal. The rest of Biden’s speech last night talked about the greatness of America, but also carried several warnings from the president. In comments that may have been aimed at Elon Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Biden warned that “an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy.” The president also launched criticism at social media and warned of the potential for problems from artificial intelligence. He also suggested 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices, a ban on stock trading for members of Congress, and a Constitutional amendment to make clear that “no president is immune from crimes he or she commits while in office.”

2 Two More Arrested For Arson In Los Angeles

The death toll from the Los Angeles wildfires stands at 25, and despite red flag warnings for the last two days, the Palisades and Eaton fires saw little to no growth according to Cal Fire Incident Commander Gerry Magana. That doesn’t mean all the news was good yesterday, as two more people were arrested for arson in separate incidents. A citizen extinguished a fire in a tree and detained an arson suspect who admitted he started the fire because he “liked the smell of burning leaves.” Tuesday night, crews responded to reports of a suspect setting trash on fire, put the fire out, and arrested the woman. Police reported the woman said she set fires because she enjoyed causing “chaos and destruction.” A group of businesses and residents in the Pacific Palisades area filed a lawsuit against the city’s Department of Water and Power on Monday, alleging that the agency and the city weren’t prepared for the Palisades Fire. The suit, filed in California Superior Court, seeks damages for the costs, repair, and replacement of damaged or destroyed property, the cost of alternative living expenses, loss of wagers, earning capacity or profits, and any other relief the court finds appropriate.

3 FDA Bans Use Of Red No. 3 Dye In Food And Drinks

The Food and Drug Administration was seeing red, and decided yesterday to ban it. The FDA said yesterday it's amending its color additive regulations to no longer allow the use of Red No. 3 in food, beverages, and ingested drugs. The dye was banned for use in cosmetics by the FDA in 1990, and at least two studies have shown that high levels of Red 3 were linked to cancer in rats. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, there are 9,201 US food products that contain Red 3; the food companies using it will have until 2027 to reformulate their products, and drugmakers will have until 2028.
