2 Parks Employee Killed Battling New York Wildfire
Officials say 60 wildfires have broken out in New York since October 1st, and now one has claimed a life. Dariel Vasquez, an 18-year-old New York state employee, was helping fight the fire in Sterling Forest on Saturday when he was killed. Police are investigating the death, and no other details have been released on the death of Vasquez. Multiple fires are reportedly burning in Orange County, where the Sterling fire is located in New York state. The same fire is also affecting New Jersey, where it’s being called the Jennings Creek Wildfire by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The fire had spread to 2,500 acres as of last night and was zero-percent contained. There’s been one arrest in New Jersey in connection to a different fire that’s spread to 350-acres. Richard Shashaty has been charged with arson and violation of regulatory provisions relating to firearms in connection to the fire that started near the Central Jersey Rifle Range. The fire has been named the Shotgun Fire, and investigators have concluded that a “Dragon’s Breath” 12-gauge incendiary shotgun round fired by Shashaty started the blaze.
3 FEMA Has Fired Employee That Told Workers To Ignore Homes In Disaster Area That Had Trump Signs
An unnamed employee of the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been fired for telling workers helping hurricane survivors to not stop at homes that had yard signs supporting President-elect Donald Trump. The agency didn’t say where the employee was working, but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said it happened in his state. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said in a statement “This is a clear violation of FEMA’s core values and principles to help people regardless of their political affiliation.” DeSantis says he’s directed the Florida Division of Emergency Management to launch an investigation into the matter.
