1 Harris Concedes Presidential Race, Biden Calls Trump To Congratulate Him

With the race for president called early yesterday in favor of Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed her supporters yesterday afternoon at Howard University, her alma mater, to tell them she had talked with Trump earlier in the day and congratulated him on his victory. While her campaign adopted a “wait and see” approach to the vote count on election night, by yesterday it became apparent that Trump would be headed back to the White House. In her speech, Harris acknowledged that her supporters were “feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now,” but stressed that Democrats had to accept the results of the election in the name of democracy. President-elect Trump also received a call from President Joe Biden yesterday afternoon. Biden reportedly congratulated Trump on his win and offered him an invitation to the White House to discuss a peaceful transfer of power. Biden also reportedly congratulated Harris on a hard-fought campaign. As of midnight last night, only Arizona and Nevada hadn’t been called in the election, although Trump held leads in both. If they eventually go to him, his current electoral vote tally of 295 would rise to 312.

2 Rafael Weakens After Hitting Cuba As A Category 3

Rafael overperformed as it made landfall in Cuba yesterday afternoon. The storm was forecast to build to at least a Category 2, but actually hit western Cuba as a Category 3, collapsing the country’s national electric grid and leaving its 10-million residents in the dark again. The grid has suffered multiple collapses over the last two months. As of the 10 pm update from the National Hurricane Center, Rafael had crossed over Cuba and entered the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane. While there’s still some uncertainty over the path that Rafael will take through the gulf, the official forecast has changed. The latest forecast path shows the storm slowing down and turning to the west today, then continuing west through the southern Gulf through Saturday. The latest path shows no chance of the storm making landfall on the Louisiana coast as was previously predicted.

3 Polls Didn't Close In Camilla, Georgia Until 3:50 AM

Results didn’t come in until early yesterday morning in Tuesday’s election, but the town of Camilla, Georgia didn’t even finish voting until after the presidential race had been called. Balloting in a special city council election in the town of 5,000 suffered several problems, including Mayor Kelvin Owens invoking emergency powers on Monday to cancel the election completely after two city election officials resigned. A judge ordered that the election must proceed, so the polls opened…at 3:50 pm. They remained open until 3:50 am yesterday morning, and Oscar Maples Jr. was declared the winner in voting after a battle that Maples told the Associated Press was “very difficult for the city.”
