1 Arrest Made After FEMA Crews Threatened In Hurricane Relieve Efforts

Rutherford County, North Carolina is still struggling to dig out from the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene, but a new problem impacted the work over the weekend. Federal Emergency Management Agency crews had to relocate because of a reported armed threat against them. National Guard troops reportedly ran into an armed militia that said they were “hunting FEMA.” CBS News reported that one person was arrested by authorities in connection to the threat, and FEMA said its disaster assistance teams were going to stay at fixed locations instead of following the common practice of going door-to-door in affected areas. The person arrested was William Parsons of Bostic, North Carolina. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call Saturday reporting that a man with an assault rifle had said he might harm FEMA employees working in the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area. He was arrested and charged with going armed to the terror of the public; the sheriff’s office reported that Parsons was armed with a handgun and a rifle when he was arrested. He was released on a $10,000 bond. The sheriff’s office said the initial report of a “truckload of militia” was determined to be wrong, and that Parsons acted alone.

2 NASA Launches Probe To Jupiter's Water Moon Europa

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launched in Florida yesterday, starting a $5.2-billion NASA probe’s trip to Europa, an ice-covered moon of Jupiter. If everything works as planned, the Europa Clipper probe will enter an orbit around Jupiter in April of 2030, and then perform 49 close flybys of Europa. Data from previous missions and long-range studies show that there’s a salt-water ocean underneath the ice, and it could be habitable. Europa is about the size of Earth’s moon, but is believed to have an ocean beneath the ice that’s made of more than twice the water of all of Earth’s oceans combined.
