1 Hurricane Helene Makes Landfall As A Category 4, Bringing Damage And Darkness
After rapidly intensifying yesterday afternoon, Hurricane Helene made landfall around 11:10 PM Eastern time last night as a Category 4 hurricane. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph on landfall on the Florida Panhandle about 45 miles east-southeast of Tallahassee, moving north-northeast at a rapid 24 mph. Helene claimed its first life about three hours before it made landfall when a sign fell onto a driver’s car in Tampa around 8 pm Eastern time on Interstate 4. Two other deaths were reported from Helene in Georgia after an apparent tornado touched down in Wheeler County and overturned a mobile home. The storm is forecast to continue to bring heavy rains today to Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.
2 Charges Against NYC Mayor Eric Adams Unsealed, Adams Says He Won't Resign
The federal indictment against New York City Mayor Eric Adams was unsealed yesterday morning, revealing the charges filed against him.One count of wire fraud, One count of conspiracy, Two counts of solicitation of a contribution from a foreign national andOne count of bribery. Prosecutors allege that Adams accepted more than $100,000 in improper benefits that weren’t publicly divulged as required, including flight upgrades on Turkish Air and says in luxury hotels. It’s also alleged that he received over $10-million in public funds” during his 2021 mayoral campaign. Shortly before the indictment was unsealed, Adams held a press conference that was interrupted by hecklers. Once he was able to speak without interruption, he made it clear that he doesn’t plan to step down as Mayor despite growing calls for him to do so. “My day-to-day will not change,” he told reporters. Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said during the press conference where he announced the charges that a Turkish government official was allegedly given a clear path to open a new high-rise building in the city without proper fire safety approval.
3 Boar's Head Plants Nationwide Now Part Of Investigation
The situation with the Boar’s Head company continues to evolve. A listeria outbreak connected to some of the company’s deli meats has now been connected to 10 deaths and at least 59 hospitalizations. While the company has closed a plant in Virginia, the Department of Agriculture is now investigating Boar’s Head plants nationwide. The deli meat company also has plants in Michigan, Arkansas, and Indiana, and it’s not yet clear if the investigation is criminal or civil in nature.
