1 Israelis Go on Strike as Protesters Demand Gaza Hostage Deal

Protests and general strikes swept Israel on Monday as frustration and anger mounted over the failure of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to secure a cease-fire deal with Hamas that would free Israeli hostages held by the militant group in Gaza for nearly 11 months. The action comes after Israel's military recovered the bodies of six hostages, including Israeli American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, from a tunnel in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, near the border with Egypt. Goldberg-Polin's funeral was held Monday in Jerusalem. He was 23. "I apologize on behalf of the state of Israel, that we failed to protect you,'' Israeli President Isaac Herzog said at the funeral. His parents vowed that his death would not be in vain. "May his memory be a revolution," his father, Jon Polin, said.

2 Four Killed In Chicago Train Shooting

Four people who were apparently asleep in their seats on a Chicago commuter train were shot and killed early yesterday. According to the Forest Park Police Department, the victims were seated apart, a suspect was arrested, and a weapon was recovered. The shooting reportedly happened on two train cars, and the train was in motion when the gunfire started. Forest Park is 10-miles west of downtown Chicago.

3 US Seizes Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's "Air Force One"

A plane belonging to President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela was seized by the US Justice Department yesterday in the Dominican Republic. The Dassault Falcon 900EX plane was taken to Florida after it was seized, with the Justice Department saying in a statement that the jet was exported from Florida in violation of US sanctions against Venezuela. The department says that associates of Maduro purchased the jet from a south Florida company for $13-million in late 2022 and early 2023. They say it was then shipped to the Caribbean and then on to Venezuela. Attorney General Merrick Garland said of the seizure “The Department will continue to pursue those who violate our sanctions and export controls to prevent them from using American resources to undermine the national security of the United States.” Maduro claimed victory in his reelection campaign in June, leading the US to recognize Maduro’s opponent as the winner and rejecting Maduro’s claim to victory.
