On Friday, News Radio 1200 WOAI's Charlie Parker was named to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame's class of 2024.
In 1992, Charlie joined WOAI in the sports department, where he hosted pre-game, post-game, and halftime shows for San Antonio Spurs games, as well as sports talk shows with coaches from the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers.
In 2003, Charlie Parker settled into his long-term role as the host on "San Antonio's First News" on WOAI. Over the past 30 years, his influence has extended far beyond San Antonio, reaching listeners across 38 states, parts of Mexico and Canada, and globally through iHeartRadio app and streaming services.
Charlie Parker's journey into radio began in the early 1970s while he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he developed a passion for broadcasting. His first broadcasting job was part-time on-air work at a station in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
After leaving the Air Force, Charlie moved to San Antonio in 1977 and started as a copywriter at KONO-KITY. He quickly transitioned to the programming department and began filling overnight on-air shifts at both KONO-KITY and another station. In 1981, he briefly returned to Florida but soon came back to San Antonio.
By 1995, Charlie played a pivotal role in launching 760 The Ticket, becoming the station's first local host on a sports talk station in San Antonio. Alongside his WOAI duties, he co-hosted a successful afternoon talk show with Chris Duel, achieving record ratings for the station.
Charlie Parker's enduring appeal lies in his distinctive blend of common sense insights and strong opinions, making him a dominant force in radio.
Charlie Parker is joined by fellow News Radio 1200 WOAI titan Henry Guerra as well as 18 others in the Class of 2024. The class will be honored on Saturday, November 2nd at the Texas Radio Hall of Fame's Annual Induction Ceremony at the Texas Broadcasting Museum in Kilgore, Texas.
