1 First Democratic Senator Calls For Biden To Drop Out Of Race For President
The growing movement to convince President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race for president seemed to pick up some momentum yesterday. Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont became the first Democratic senator to call for the president to drop out, writing in an op-ed for “The Washington Post” that “for the good of the country, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race.” It wasn’t just Welch weighing in on Biden’s campaign yesterday: In an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” yesterday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi didn’t exactly give President Biden a glowing endorsement when asked if she thought he should drop out. “It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run. We’re all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running short,” she said during the interview. The wording of her statement caught everyone’s attention in Washington, because Biden has said several times that he’s not dropping out. In a “New York Times” op-ed, actor and major Democratic donor George Clooney was more blunt, saying “We need a new nominee.” Clooney, who hosted a multi-million dollar fundraiser for Biden just before the debate, wrote, “The Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe “big F-ing deal” Biden of 2010. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
2 Bill Overhauling Oversight Of Federal Prison System Passes, Headed To President's Desk
The Senate did a rare thing yesterday. Legislation to overhaul oversight of the federal Bureau of Prisons passed the chamber unanimously, which sends the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The Federal Prison Oversight Act, which was passed by the House in May, will establish an independent ombudsman for the agency to investigate a host of problems that have surfaced with the running of federal prisons, including sexual abuse and other criminal misconduct by prison staff, understaffing, escapes, and several high-profile deaths. The bill was introduced in 2022 by Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who was chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee’s subcommittee on investigations at the time. In a statement, Ossoff called the Senate passage of the bill “a major milestone,” and advocates for people in prison had praise for the bill as well.
3 Suspect Detained In UK After Three Women Killed With A Crossbow
Police in England detained 26-year-old Kyle Clifford after an hours-long manhunt yesterday in connection with a triple murder. “BBC News” said the victims were the wife and two adult daughters of BBC Racing commentator John Hunt, and all three were killed with a crossbow. Clifford was reportedly found where he lives with unspecified injuries, and police say no shots were fired during the arrest. Crossbows are legal in the UK and no license or registration is required to own one, although it is against the law to carry one in public.
