1 Congress Pushing President Biden To Get Approval Before Launching Airstrikes
After President Joe Biden made comments on Sunday that America would respond to a drone attack that left three US soldiers dead and over 30 injured at a base in Jordan, some members of Congress are insisting that Biden get congressional approval before he launches any air strikes in retaliation. The White House says that the president already has the authority to carry out the strikes from two authorizations for the use of military force that were put into place by Congress after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A bipartisan group of senators sent Biden a letter urging him to come to Congress before taking any military action. Sen. Mike Lee, a member of the bipartisan group that sent the letter, told reporters “I want to know what the source of authority is,” and said the post-9/11 authorizations had been used “as the Swiss Army Knife for every conflict out there.” During yesterday’s White House press briefing, Admiral John Kirby refused to discuss the timing or any specifics about planned responses to the attack, saying he wasn’t interested in “telegraphing any punches.” Not everyone in Congress wants a delay on a response, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell saying last week that “this is no time for 535 commanders in chief dictating battlefield tactics from halfway around the world.”
2 Department Of Justice Investigating Unnamed Democratic Representative
This can’t be good. It was revealed yesterday that the Department of Justice issued a grand jury subpoena to the House of Representatives Sergeant at Arms requesting documents. There’s no official word on exactly what it’s about, but sources have told ABC News that it relates to a Democratic member of the House allegedly misusing government funds. As expected, the DOJ, the House Sergeant at Arms, and House Speaker Mike Johnson declined to comment on the matter involving an unnamed House member
3 US Issues Travel Alert For Bahamas Due To Increase In Violent Crime
The turmoil in the world continues to grow. The State Department has issued a warning for American travelers headed to the Bahamas, advising travelers to “exercise increased caution.” What prompted the advisory? An increase in violent crime, including burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, has occurred mainly on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. The warning says that “gang-on-gang violence has resulted in a high homicide rate primarily affecting the local population,” and says the crime has happened “in both tourist and non-tourist areas.” According to a security alert issued last week by the US Embassy in the Bahamas, “18 murders have occurred in Nassau since the beginning of 2024.”
