1 One Dead In California Avalanche, Severe Weather Continues To Threaten Millions

The fallout from this week’s severe weather continues to impact areas of the country from coast to coast, with more on the way. One person was killed in an avalanche in Lake Tahoe, California yesterday at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort. Authorities have identified the victim as 66-year-old Kenneth Kidd, which is the first avalanche fatality in the US of the 2023-2024 season. Two other people received minor injuries, but no one has been reported missing in the avalanche, which reportedly gouged a path 10 feet deep, around 150 feet wide, and over 400 feet long. A strong storm has dumped a lot of snow on the Sierra Nevada mountains this week and continues to fall. While wintery weather is causing severe problems across the Midwest, it’s flooding that’s causing the most problems now in the Northeast. Hundreds of thousands of customers were still without power in the US yesterday, with many of them in New York and Pennsylvania. The Pawtuxet River in Rhode Island and the Pompton and Passaic Rivers in New York could go into major flood stage this week as a result of severe rain over the last few days, and dam conditions in Norwich, Connecticut prompted officials to issue a mandatory evacuation order yesterday for areas along the Yantic River. Another storm is starting to make its way across the country and has already dumped up to 30 inches of snow on the Pacific Northwest over 24 hours. That storm is expected to reach the Northeast late tomorrow night into Saturday morning, with more heavy rain, winds, and flooding expected. Today through tomorrow, the system brings a threat of severe weather from Texas to the Carolinas.

2 Chris Christie Drops Out Of Presidential Race, Caught On Hot Mic Saying Haley Will Get “Smoked”

Chris Christie’s campaign went out with controversial comments, but not ones the former governor meant for everyone to hear. Talking to a roomful of supporters in New Hampshire last night at what turned out to be his final campaign event, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie officially suspended his campaign for president. Christie told the crowd that he no longer saw “a path for me to win the nomination.” Christie didn’t endorse any of the remaining candidates, which didn’t surprise many considering the criticism he hasn’t been shy to share publicly about them. While his campaign ending is news, what’s dominating the conversation are comments he made before the event that were caught on his campaign’s livestream by a microphone he apparently didn’t know was live at the time. Referring to former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, Christie told someone that “She’s going to get smoked,” a comment that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis responded to the comment on X saying that he agreed Haley would “get smoked.” Christie had comments on DeSantis as well on the hot mic, saying that DeSantis had called him and was “petrified,” presumably that Christie would endorse Haley.

3 Nick Saban Announces His Retirement From Coaching

According to sources, legendary Alabama football coach Nick Saban is retiring. At the age of 72, Saban just wrapped up his 17th season as head coach of the Crimson Tide. During those 17 years, Saban racked up 201 wins, which is tied for second-most at a single school in the history of the SEC. Saban can also boast about seven national titles during his coaching run, six while with Alabama. His entire college coaching career has gone for 28 years, during which he never had a losing season, though he did have two .500 seasons while with Michigan State.
