1 Colorado Supreme Court Removes Trump From 2024 Ballot
The Colorado Supreme Court overruled a lower court’s earlier decision with a 4-3 decision yesterday and created chaos in the state’s 2024 Republican primary. The Court declared former President Donald Trump ineligible for the White House under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which was placed into the Constitution after the Civil War to bar anyone from office who swore an oath to “support” the Constitution and then “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against it. There are multiple lawsuits attempting to do the same in various states. A judge in Michigan has already ruled that Congress, not the judicial system, should decide if Trump can stay on the ballot there. The Colorado court stayed its decision until January 4th, or until the US Supreme Court rules on the case. The ruling would bar Trump from appearing on the Republican primary ballot in the state, Colorado officials say the issue has to be settled by January 5th, which is the deadline for the state to print its presidential primary ballots. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll in September, 44-percent of Americans said Trump should be barred from the presidency by the 14th Amendment, while 50-percent said he shouldn’t.
2 President Biden And Chief Justice Roberts Lead Funeral Tributes To Sandra Day O'Connor
President Joe Biden, Chief Justice John Roberts, and others paid tribute to former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor at a memorial service yesterday at the Washington National Cathedral. In his comments, Biden said O’Connor was a “vital line of defense for the values and the vision of our republic, devoted not to the pursuit of power for power’s sake but to make real the promise of America.” Chief Justice Roberts told stories of his time working with O’Connor and praised how she overcame all the barriers she faced in her career. “Sandra Day O’Connor had to study and launch a career in the law when most men in the established profession did not want women lawyers, let alone judges. O’Connor was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. She died on December 1st at the age of 93 and left detailed instructions for her service, including the music and the speakers, which also included her youngest son Jay and her biographer, Evan Thomas.
3 ACLU Files Lawsuit To Block Texas Law That Authorizes Police To Arrest Migrants
The new law signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to allow police to arrest migrants entering the state, and told you that legal challenges would follow quickly, and that turned out to be accurate. The ACLU of Texas filed a lawsuit in federal court yesterday challenging the new law, filed on behalf of the County of El Paso and advocacy groups. The filing says that SB 4 would pose a threat to mixed-status families who are an “integral part of the El Paso community.” The new law isn’t scheduled to go into effect until March, giving the suit time to start working its way through the courts.
