1 Gov. Greg Abbott Signs Bill That Lets Local Police Arrest Illegal Immigrants

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation into law yesterday in response to the immigration problems in his state. The new law makes it a criminal offense to enter the state illegally, would allow state law enforcement to arrest anyone crossing the border illegally. While signing the bill at an event in Brownsville, Abbott called out President Joe Biden, saying, “Biden’s deliberate inaction has left Texas to fend for itself.” The new law makes it a misdemeanor to enter or attempt to enter Texas from a foreign country at any location other than a lawful port of entry. It’s scheduled to go into effect in March, but the new law is expected to be challenged in court. A group of 21 Texas Democrats and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus signed a letter yesterday asking the Justice Department to block the new law, which they called “the most extreme anti-immigrant state bill.”

At least three people died from the storm yesterday: An 89-year-old man was killed by a tree that fell and trapped him in his trailer in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. A man was struck and killed by a tree while trying to remove debris from his roof in Windham, Maine.A driver in upstate Greene County, New York died after their car was swept away in floodwaters. 3 Southwest Gets Record Fine For Last Year's Holiday Travel Meltdown

The penalty is in for Southwest Airlines because of the travel meltdown last holiday season, and it’s enormous. The US Department of Transportation announced yesterday that the airline is being fined a record $140 million for the problems, and it’s not the new record-holder by a small margin. The $140 million fine is about 30 times larger than any previous fine against an airline. The DOT said it’s also requiring Southwest to start issuing a $75 flight credit to any passenger whose arrival is delayed for over three hours if it’s the airline’s fault. That fine is added into roughly $600 million in refunds and reimbursements Southwest had previously agreed to.
