1 UNLV Shooter Sent Letters To 22 University Personal Before Shooting

More details were released yesterday about the shooter that killed three people on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Wednesday. Police identified the man as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a self-described “semi-retired university professor” who previously taught at East Carolina University in North Carolina. According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Sheriff Kevin McMahill said in a press conference that Polito used a 9mm pistol in the attack and had over 150 ammunition with him when he was killed by campus police. Police found a dashcam in Polito’s vehicle, which led them to discover that the shooter had mailed 22 letters to various university personnel across the country. Sheriff McMahill said during the press conference that the first of the letters that investigators opened after finding them among 14,000 letters at the post office contained a white powder. Test results on the powder showed that it was talcum powder. Polito reportedly had a list of targets for the shooting but didn’t find any of the people on the list before he started shooting other victims in the Beam Hall building on campus. Two of the victims were identified by authorities yesterday, 64-year-old Cha Jan Chang, a UNLV business professor, and 39-year-old Patricia Navarro Velez, an assistant professor in accounting. The third victim will be identified once the family has been notified.

2 News Agency Accuses Israel of Killing Journalist

In what two human rights organizations concluded was probably an intentional attack and war crime, an investigation revealed Israeli tank fire killed a Reuters video journalist and injured six reporters on Oct. 13 in Lebanon, the news agency said Thursday. Videographer Issam Abdallah, 37, who had covered wars for years, was filming Israeli shelling less than a mile away from the border with Lebanon when a round hit a group of journalists from different agencies, killing Abdallah, Reuters said. A second strike less than 40 minutes later severely injured AFP photographer Christina Assi, 28. Reuters said its investigation included conducting interviews with more than 30 sources, reviewing extensive photos and video footage as well as studying evidence from the site.

3 Nine Tax-Related Charges Filed Against Hunter Biden

Hunter Biden was indicted on nine tax charges in California yesterday as special counsel David Weiss continues his investigation into the business dealings of President Joe Biden’s son. The three felonies and six misdemeanors in the list of charges are in addition to federal firearms charges in Delaware. If convicted, Hunter could face a maximum of 17 years in prison, and the special counsel probe is still open. The White House declined to comment on the new charges, referring questions to the Justice Department or Hunter’s personal reps. The indictment comes as Republicans continue an impeachment inquiry into the president that was announced by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in September.
