1 Manhunt In Maine Continues For Suspect In Mass Shooting

A multistate manhunt continued through the night for Army reservist Robert Card, the man suspected of killing 18 people Wednesday night in Lewiston, Maine, and injuring 13 others. Hundreds of law enforcement officers from along the Eastern seaboard are helping the effort, including the FBI, US Marshals, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and police departments from Boston to New York City. A shelter-in-place order remained in effect last night for residents of Lewiston, Lisbon, and Bowdoin, the town where Card lived. Law enforcement put a search warrant for his home in Bowdoin to use late yesterday, and reportedly found a note left by the shooter. What the note said wasn’t released by police, who said they were trying to “determine the meaning” of the note, and police left the property around 9 p.m. last night without finding Card. Card’s vehicle was found abandoned at a boat landing in Lisbon, where a boat was stolen. When asked if they had any idea where Card could be hiding, Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said “We’re actively searching for him. We don’t know his location, and I’ll leave it at that.”

2 War In Israel: US Strikes Back At Iranian-Backed Groups, Israel Strikes Gaza On The Ground

After more than a dozen rocket and drone attacks against bases housing American troops, the US struck back against Iranian-backed forces yesterday. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement “Today, at President Biden’s direction, US military forces conducted self-defense strikes on two facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups.” The attacks on American troops stationed in Iraq and Syria injured 21 service members. “The United States does not seek conflict and has no intention nor desire to engage in further hostilities,” Austin’s statement continued, adding that “these Iranian-backed attacks against US forces are unacceptable and must stop.” While Israel agreed to delay its ground invasion of Gaza until the US could get missile defense systems in place, a column of armored bulldozers and tanks entered northern Gaza yesterday “in preparation for the next stages of combat” according to the Israel Defense Forces. Israel also said yesterday afternoon that it killed the co-architect of the October 7th Hamas attack in an air strike.

3 Rep. Dean Phillips Is Now Challenging President Biden For Democratic Nomination

In an exclusive interview with “CBS Mornings,” Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Montana confirmed that he’s decided to challenge President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president. When asked by CBS News Chief Robert Costa if he’s running for president, Phillips replied “I am. I have to.” The 54-year-old said he admires Biden, but that he’s alarmed by the president’s polling data. “I will not sit still and not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we’re going to be facing an emergency next November,” Phillips said. The representative is also encouraging other Democrats to enter the primary, even though he admits that he and any other candidates are facing an uphill battle. Phillips is scheduled to be in New Hampshire today, which is the filing deadline to be on the primary ballot in the state. Biden’s reelection campaign confirmed earlier this week that the president won’t be on the ballot for New Hampshire’s primary next year because of party guidelines.
