1 Israel Continues Attacks On Gaza, American Death Toll Rises To 22

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at yesterday’s press briefing that the number of Americans killed in Israel is now at 22, with 17 Americans still missing after the Hamas attack on Saturday. While government officials are saying that there’s still no hard evidence that Iran was involved in the attack, President Joe Biden issued a warning to the country while talking with Jewish Community leaders at the White House yesterday, telling Iran and Hezbollah to “Be careful.” While 17 Americans are classified as missing, they might not all be hostages. After 10 p.m. Eastern Time last night, the Israel Defense Force launched what it called an “extensive attack” on “many centers” of Hamas in Gaza. The Palestinian terror group Hamas called on Muslims worldwide to stage a “Day of Jihad” tomorrow. According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, the message said Friday 13th “is a day for heroism, and dedication, and to earn the honor of defending the first Qibla of Muslims.”

2 Rep. Steve Scalise Nominated For Speaker, But Doesn't Have The Votes To Win Yet

Rep. Steve Scalise won a narrow victory to become the Republican nominee to be speaker of the House yesterday morning in a vote during a closed-door forum, but the 113-99 final vote shows there’s still work to be done before he’ll have a chance to take the gavel. A floor vote was originally scheduled at 3 p.m. Eastern Time yesterday but was postponed when it became clear that Scalise didn’t have enough votes to win on the first ballot, a goal Republicans have set to avoid the 15-ballot process it took to elect former Speaker Kevin McCarthy in January. With all Democratic representatives committed to vote for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as their nominee for speaker, Scalise can only lose four Republican votes to win. “NBC News” counted at least eight who have said they won’t vote for Scalise, meaning he would lose. There’s no timetable for when a vote might be held, as it will depend on when Republicans feel they have the votes to elect Scalise.

3 Ticket Sold In California Wins $1.73-Billion Powerball Jackpot

Another massive lottery jackpot has been won by a single ticket in California. The winning Powerball ticket sold in Frasier Park, California, a town between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, will claim the $1.73-billion jackpot. It was the second-largest jackpot in Powerball history, but it wasn’t the only winner. Tickets bought in Florida, Indiana, Oregon, and Virginia each matched five numbers, making them all winners of $1-million. The largest Powerball ever was the $2.04-billion jackpot won by a ticket in California last November. The third-largest? It was split among winning tickets in 2016 bought in Indiana, Oregon, Virginia…and California. The winning numbers last night were 22, 24, 40, 52, and 64, with a Powerball of 10.
