1 U.S. Sends Carrier Strike Group To Israel Region As Americans Reported Dead And Taken Hostage In Hamas Attack

A brutal attack on Israel by Hamas on Saturday has led to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet declaring war. As of last night, the death toll in Israel was around 700, with the number of Palestinians killed in counter-attacks pushing the total number of fatalities over a thousand. In a phone briefing last night, House and Senate legislators were reportedly told that there were at least four Americans killed in the attack and that the number will most likely rise in the coming days. The attack started with a barrage of thousands of missiles that provided cover for Hamas fighters to enter the country on paragliders from Gaza. In addition to the fatalities, an unknown number of hostages were taken by the invaders back into Palestinian territory. While many countries have condemned the attack, President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran called the attack a “victory” and a “manifestation of resistance.” The U.S. is sending a carrier strike group to the region and began supplying Israel with munitions and other military supplies yesterday. The strike group includes the carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser, and four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said yesterday afternoon that military assets on the ground are being increased, with steps taken “to augment U.S. Air Force F-35, F-15, F-16, and A-10 fighter aircraft squadrons in the region.”

2 House Hopes To Select New Speaker This Week

The pressure continues to mount for the Republican caucus in the House of Representatives to elect a new speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who became the first speaker to be removed from office by vote in the history of the country last week. His final act as speaker was to push through a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded, but that temporary agreement will expire on November 17th. Without an elected speaker, the House is effectively paralyzed, with Speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry limited to only conducting business involving electing a new holder of the gavel. That also means that the House of Representatives is currently powerless to respond to the Hamas attack on Israel over the weekend. Not only can the House not approve any emergency funding to support Israel in the war, it can’t even consider a resolution condemning the attack. There’s even a question as to whether McHenry could even call for a moment of silence on the House floor.

3 Ukraine Claims To Have Developed An "Invisibility Cloak" For Snipers

Ukraine claims it’s invented an “invisibility cloak” to help soldiers, especially snipers, evade Russian thermal-imaging cameras and drones. A video posted on X (which we keep having to point out was formerly Twitter) shows that a soldier wearing the new advancement is much fainter in thermal imaging than uncloaked soldiers. The development team said they can produce around 150 of the jackets per month, and that they work best when the soldiers move slowly because rapid movements cause their body temperature to rise.
