1 Senate Introduces A Bipartisan Bill To Keep The Government Funded Through November 17th
While the House of Representatives tries to overcome a deadlock over legislation to fund the federal government, the Senate is making a move to accomplish that goal. The bipartisan bill, negotiated between Democratic and Republican leaders, would keep the federal government funded until November 17th. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made it clear from the floor of the Senate yesterday that the bill isn’t a long-term solution, but would give Congress more time to reach an agreement. The House did see some progress last night, voting to begin debate on four government funding bills, but both the efforts by the House and Senate seem doomed to ultimately fail. House Republicans have made it clear they’re not in favor of a short-term funding bill like the one proposed by the Senate yesterday, while the bills being debated in the House have no chance to pass in the Senate. If Congress doesn’t avoid the deadline for passing legislation Saturday night, it’ll be the 15th time the federal government has shut down since 1980.
2 New York Judge Rules Donald Trump "Repeatedly" Violated Fraud Law And Orders The Dissolution Of The Trump Organization
Former President Donald Trump was dealt a huge blow by Judge Arthur Engoron yesterday when he ruled that Trump and his company “repeatedly” violated New York state fraud laws. The ruling came in response to a request from New York Attorney General Letitia James, seeking a judgment on one of the claims in her $250 million civil lawsuit against Trump that’s scheduled to go to trial Monday. Engoron agreed with James’ office that it’s beyond dispute that Trump and his company misrepresented his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion, but the ruling didn’t stop there. Judge Engoron ordered in his ruling that Trump’s business certificates be canceled, effectively dissolving the Trump organization. The ruling gives the defendants 10 days to recommend potential independent receivers to manage the dissolution of the LLC’s that are being canceled. Trump’s team asked the judge to dismiss the case, arguing that many of the loans being questioned happened too long ago to be considered. Engoron rejected that motion. Trump’s team will appeal the ruling.
3 The List Of Senators Calling For Sen. Bob Menendez To Resign Is Up To 26
New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez continues to say that he’ll be proven innocent of federal bribery charges and refuses to resign, but the sentiment from his fellow Democratic colleagues isn’t exactly supportive. In addition to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy calling for him to step down, roughly half of Democratic senators are saying it’s time for Menendez to leave office. The list of Senators calling for his resignation as of last night includes: Democratic John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Democratic Peter Welch of Vermont, Democratic Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Democratic Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Democratic Jon Tester of Montana, Democratic Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Democratic Jacky Rosen of Nevada, Democratic Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Democratic Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Democratic Cory Booker of New Jersey. 25 of the 26 senators calling for his resignation are Democrats, with former Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders joining the list but no Republicans calling for him to step down so far.
