1 Jacksonville Shooter Targeted Black People According To Sheriff
After a gunman killed three people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, officials say the shooting was racially motivated. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said that the shooter, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the store, killed 52-year-old Angela Michelle Carr, 19-year-old Anolt Joseph “AJ” Laguerre Jr., and 29-year-old De’Shaun Gallion. Dollar General confirmed last night that Laguerre was an employee of the store. Sheriff Waters said the shooter had swastikas on his weapons and left a manifesto on his home computer that used the “N-word” frequently, leaving no doubt in his mind as to his motivation. Gov. Ron DeSantis called the shooter a “deranged scumbag” yesterday, but when he appeared at a vigil just before 6 p.m. yesterday he was booed by the crowd. While speaking at the vigil, Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon accused DeSantis of being insincere when he said he wanted to protect citizens, telling MSNBC last night “This is a governor who has done nothing but fan these types of happenings throughout our state.”
2 Idalia Forecast To Hit Florida As A Category 2 Hurricane This Week
Tropical storm Idalia formed over the weekend in the southern Gulf of Mexico, and forecasters say it’s headed for Florida. Storm surge and hurricane watches have been issued for parts of Cuba and the Florida gulf coast, and the storm is expected to become a full hurricane before making landfall later this week, possibly as early as today. The storm was “nearly stationary” as of 11 p.m. last night, according to the National Hurricane Center, but was expected to start moving north-northeastward today. There’s cause for concern for those in Florida and Georgia, as the NHC expects the storm will be “near or at major hurricane intensity” by the time it approaches land late tomorrow night. “Major hurricane intensity” means a Category 3 or higher storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. As usual, the storm is expected to rapidly lose strength once it makes landfall, and is forecast to travel over eastern Georgia and through the coastal areas of the Carolinas no later than Thursday.
3 At Least Three Dead And Over A Dozen Injured In Weekend Shootings Around The Country
While the racially-motivated shooting at a Dollar General in Jacksonville, Florida has gotten a lot of attention, it wasn’t the only instance of gunfire injuring or killing people around the country over the weekend. Seven people were shot at the 50th annual Caribbean carnival and parade in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. None of the injuries were life-threatening, and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox told the press “This morning’s shooting is not related to the parade that occurred.” He also confirmed that police had two suspects in custody and had recovered multiple weapons. A teenager was killed and two others were shot at a high school football game Friday night in Choctaw, Oklahoma. Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said police believe an argument between at least two men broke out on the visitor’s side of the stadium. Two guns and eight rounds were recovered from the scene, and a person of interest is still on the loose. Parents describe the chaos of everyone running for their lives at the game. A 20-year-old student at the University of South Carolina was shot and killed Saturday when he accidentally tried to enter the wrong house on his street and was mistaken for a burglar. The victim, identified as Nicholas Anthony Donofrio, was from Connecticut and had just started his sophomore year last week. A shooting near a Louisville, Kentucky restaurant around 3 a.m. yesterday morning left one dead and five injured, one of whom reportedly remains in critical condition. There have been no arrests in the shooting as of last night. Chicago police are investigating a shooting during a White Sox baseball game at Guaranteed Rate Field Friday night. A 42-year-old woman was shot in the leg, and a 26-year-old woman was grazed in her abdomen. According to the White Sox organization, investigators aren’t sure if shots were fired from outside or inside the ballpark. A postgame concert for the announced crowd of 21,906 featuring Vanilla Ice, Rob Base, and Tone Loc was canceled after the shooting. Biloxi, Mississippi officials say that 20-year-old Damari Daniels died from multiple gunshot wounds early Saturday morning at an apartment complex. Local security cameras captured the sound of almost a dozen shots being fired, and multiple other people were injured in the shooting, with one being taken to a hospital for treatment.
