1 Time Is Running Out For The People On The Missing Submersible
The five people aboard the submersible that’s been missing since it dropped into the Atlantic for a trip to the wreckage of the Titanic on Sunday are out of time by some estimates. The Coast Guard estimated yesterday that the Titan could run out of air by 7:08 a.m. today. Experts say they could have been taking measures to conserve oxygen, but it’s not clear how much additional time that would give them, if any. As of yesterday afternoon, searchers had covered an area twice the size of Connecticut on the surface, and Coast Guard Capt. Jamie Frederick said the underwater search that’s reached as far as 2.5 miles deep is “an incredibly complex search operation.” More “noises” were heard by a Canadian P-3 aircraft yesterday, but a Navy analysis of the noises came back inconclusive, with Capt. Frederick saying “We don’t know what the noises are to be frank with you.” The five people on board the sub are Stockton Rush, the CEO and founder of OceanGate, the company leading the trip, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Sulaiman, and French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
2 House Votes To Censure Rep. Adam Schiff
House Republicans voted to censure Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff yesterday with a 213-209 vote along party lines. The first attempt to censure Schiff last week was rejected with the help of 20 Republicans. Republicans filed the motion to censure Schiff because of his criticisms of then-President Donald Trump, and the role he played in leading the first impeachment against Trump. This is only the 25th time in American history that a member of the House has been censured. After the vote, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy ordered Schiff to stand on the House floor to receive the censure, a process that was accompanied by chants of “Shame!” and “Disgrace!” directed at McCarthy by Democratic members of the chamber. The resolution forces the House Ethics Committee to launch an investigation into Schiff, and five of the six Republicans who voted “present” on the motion serve on that committee; it’s traditional that members of a committee vote “present” on motions that may lead to an investigation by their committee. Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado also voted present but is not on the Ethics Committee.
3 Former FBI Analyst Sentenced To Prison For Illegally Keeping Classified Documents
U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough sentenced former FBI intelligence analyst Kendra Kingsbury to three years and 10 months in federal prison without parole yesterday for illegally keeping hundreds of classified documents at her home. She pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully retaining documents relating to national defense in October in a case that involved alleged violations of the Espionage Act. That’s the same law that’s part of the current federal indictment against former President Donald Trump. Kingsbury held a TOP SECRET security clearance for more than 12 years, and while prosecutors alleged in court documents that she had kept around 386 classified documents, prosecutors said in their sentencing memo that “The FBI ultimately determined that over 20,000 documents that originated either at the FBI or some other government agency were found in the defendant’s residence,” including some that detailed intelligence sources and methods. Why did she do it? Prosecutors said the FBI investigation “revealed more questions and concerns than answers.”
