1 Biden And McCarthy Reach Agreement On Debt Ceiling

A debt ceiling deal has been reached between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and now the work begins. Even before the final text of the bill was released, some lawmakers were already criticizing the deal, with some saying it doesn’t do enough to reduce the debt while others are worried that it cuts too much spending and will be bad for low-income families. Some of the most conservative members of Congress were the first to call the deal a “disaster” and “insanity,” while some Democratic legislators on the left of the party were calling it “bad policy.” Now that the deal is made, Biden and McCarthy have to sell enough members of their own parties on the bill to get it to pass. Reviews of the compromise deal from outside the Capitol are approving it, with the over 200 CEOs that make up the Business Roundtable and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce calling on Congress to pass the measure as soon as possible. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget said that if the bill passes, it’ll be the first major deficit-reducing budget agreement in over a decade. The earliest Congress would vote on the bill is reportedly tomorrow. Over the weekend, the date of default was moved to June 5th, less than a week from today.

2 Trial For Impeached Texas Attorney General To Start By August

The Republican-controlled Texas House overwhelmingly voted to impeach the state’s Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton this weekend. Paxton was impeached on charges of bribery and misuse of office after almost a decade of scandals and criminal accusations. As an immediate result of the vote, Paxton was suspended from office pending his trial in the state Senate, which was set to start no later than August 28th in a special session called yesterday by Governor Greg Abbott. Paxton’s wife, Republican Senator Angela Paxton, would potentially vote on whether or not to convict her husband in the Senate trial. She hasn’t commented on the impeachment so far, nor has she said if she’ll recuse herself from the proceedings. Paxton is only the third sitting official to be impeached in almost 200 years in Texas, and called the House investigation “corrupt” and denies any wrongdoing.

3 Florida Beach Boardwalk Shooting Leaves Nine Injured

Nine people in a large crowd were injured when gunfire broke out on a beachside boardwalk in Hollywood, Florida yesterday afternoon. The nine people hurt included six adults and three children between the ages of one and 17. Hollywood Public Information Manager Deanna Bettineschi told the press that a fight broke out between two groups, at least one gun was pulled out and shots were fired. At least one person was in custody as of last night, but police are looking for more suspects. Hollywood Beach, which is 20 miles north of Miami and about 11 miles south of Fort Lauderdale, was expecting large crowds for the Memorial Day weekend. Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien said thousands of people were in the area and dozens of police officers responded to the call of shots fired.
