1 Texas House Committee Issues 20 Articles of Impeachment Against Attorney General Ken Paxton

In an unprecedented move, a Texas House committee voted Thursday to recommend that Attorney General Ken Paxton be impeached and removed from office, citing 20 accusations that include bribery, retaliating against whistleblowers and obstruction of justice. Around 8 p.m., the House General Investigating Committee filed its impeachment resolution with the House clerk. It included the 20 articles listing a yearslong pattern of alleged misconduct and lawbreaking that investigators detailed one day earlier. On the House floor, some lawmakers could be heard yelling the number of the newly filed articles, and several could be seen reading the document minutes after it was filed. The House will next decide whether to approve the articles against Paxton, which could lead to the attorney general’s removal from office pending the outcome of a trial to be conducted by the Senate.

2 Debt Ceiling News: A Deal Could Come Soon, GOP Aide Says

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy left the Capitol yesterday around 6:30 p.m. with no deal done in the negotiations over raising the debt ceiling. The House is now out of Washington for the holiday weekend, but the members have been told to prepare to return on 24 hours’ notice if a deal is reached. While people involved in the negotiations have said progress is being made, Republican Rep. Garret Graves told reporters last night that “progress is slow,” and there are still “a lot of hang-ups.” President Joe Biden has reportedly made some concessions, including offering to freeze government spending at current levels for the next two years, but McCarthy says there’s still work to be done before a deal can be reached. Democratic lawmakers are calling on President Biden to make a prime-time address to the nation to use the “bully pulpit” to call out House Republicans, but none has been scheduled so far. Biden did tell reporters yesterday that congressional leaders have all said there will be no default. Negotiations are continuing throughout the weekend, and McCarthy told Fox News yesterday that a deal will be reached and could happen “any day.”

3 Russia Moves Tactical Nuclear Weapons To Belarus

For the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia moved yesterday to deploy tactical nuclear weapons outside of its borders. The U.S. State Department denounced Russia’s plan to deploy tactical nukes in Belarus yesterday. While the plan to deploy the weapons was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 25th, Russia started moving forward with the plan yesterday. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller described the plans yesterday as “the latest example of irresponsible behavior that we have seen from Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine over a year ago.” Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said the nukes were already on the move, and when asked if they were already in Belarus, Lukashenko said “Possibly. When I get back I will check.”
