1 Migrant Numbers Drop By 50% At The Southern Border Over The Weekend

The expected surge of migrants after the expirations of Title 42 on Thursday night has failed to materialize so far, with Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas saying yesterday that the Border Patrol “has experienced a 50% drop in the number of encounters versus what we were experiencing earlier in the week.” Border agents reported around 6,300 encounters on Friday and 4,200 on Saturday, down from a record high of 10,000 a day earlier last week. While Mayorkas says he believes the drop in numbers shows the policies of the Biden administration are working, others have a different view. Speaking on “State of the Union” yesterday, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green said the policies of the administration are “basically making the problem of migration worse.”

2 President Biden Expected To Meet With Congressional Leaders For More Debt Talks Tomorrow

The second White House meeting to discuss raising the debt ceiling that was postponed from Friday is now set to take place tomorrow, and President Joe Biden said yesterday that he’s optimistic the group can reach a deal. Biden said he had received an update on how talks had gone between his staff and those of the leaders in the House and Senate. “I remain optimistic because I’m a congenital optimist,” Biden told reporters. The president is still scheduled to leave for Japan on Wednesday for a meeting of G7 leaders, which could prevent any other talks this week. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has estimated the government will run out of money in early June, giving officials just a couple of weeks to reach an agreement to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a default.

3 Two Dead, Five Injured In Arizona Shooting On Saturday

Gunfire claimed more lives over the weekend, with two people dead and five others injured in a Yuma, Arizona shooting on Saturday night. The shooting happened just before 11 p.m., and when police responded they found seven victims, all males, with gunshot wounds. Two of the victims, ages 19 and 20, were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead, white a third victim, a 16-year-old boy, was flown to Phoenix for treatment with life-threatening injuries. The four victims with non-life-threatening injuries included boys aged 15 and 16, and two men aged 18 and 19. No suspects were in custody as of last night, and police say they’re still trying to find a possible motive. A cash reward of up to $1,000 is possible for information that leads to an arrest.
