1 FBI Arrests Suspect Accused Of Leaking Documents Online
FBI agents arrested 21-year-old Jack Teixeira yesterday in connection with the classified documents that were leaked in a Discord channel. Attorney General Merrick Garland said he’ll be charged with the unauthorized removal of classified national defense information. While federal officials arrested him, Teixeira was first identified by The New York Times and the investigative website Bellingcat. Teixeira reportedly had access to highly classified information as part of his regular duties with the Massachusetts Air National Guard. He allegedly posted on Discord under the name “the O.G.” and “jackthedripper,” according to a member of the channel who’s remaining anonymous out of fear for his safety. The member told press outlets that Teixeira had been posting classified info for months, first by typing it out and then by posting pictures of documents. The anonymous channel member said there wasn’t any malicious intent in sharing the documents, saying “This guy was a Christian, anti-war, just wanted to inform some of his friends about what’s going on.” President Joe Biden said in part yesterday that he wasn’t “concerned about the leak. I’m concerned that it happened.”
2 Severe Florida Flooding After Over A Foot Of Rain In 24 Hours
Fort Lauderdale, Florida had the rainiest day in its history from Wednesday into yesterday with 25.91 inches of rain falling in a 24-hour period according to the National Weather Service. The rain flooded the entire area, forcing the closure of schools and the airport, and leading to multiple emergency rescue efforts. Cars were left abandoned as people fled the rapidly-rising waters on foot. Meteorologist Ana Torres-Vazquez with the National Weather Service’s Miami office says the rain total is what the area would normally get from a high-end hurricane over more than a day, and said this week’s rainfall was a “one-in-1,000 year event, or greater.” Fort Lauderdale’s average rainfall for the entire month of April is just three inches, and it’s been a quarter of a century since the city had 20 inches of rain in a month.
3 Donald Trump Gave A Deposition In A Different Court Battle Yesterday In NYC
Former President Donald Trump spent around eight hours giving a deposition at New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office in New York City yesterday. The deposition is part of the AG’s $250 million lawsuit alleging that Trump committed fraud in his real estate business practices. Trump arrived just after 9:30 a.m. and left short after 6 p.m. In a statement yesterday morning, Trump attorney Alina Habba said that the former president was “not only willing but also eager to testify” in the case, saying that he was eager about “educating the Attorney General about the immense success of his multi-billion dollar company.” This deposition was for a different legal matter than the one that led to his indictment by a grand jury on 34 counts, nor is it connected to the civil rape trial he faces this month. A federal judge denied Trump’s request yesterday to delay the rape trial.
