1 At Least 13 Dead Due To Severe Weather In The South

At least 13 people have died in multiple states due to severe weather. The latest storm has brought golf ball-sized hail and tornadoes to the South that have been very severe in certain parts. The storm’s wind gusts were so extreme that they toppled tractor-trailer trucks and left around one million people without power in the Great Lakes, South, and mid-Atlantic states. Meanwhile, more than a dozen people have lost their lives in the storm. Six deaths were reported across five counties in Kentucky, while two people have reportedly died in Tennessee, both due to a tree falling on them. A Tennessee high school student has been in critical condition from a falling tree during severe storms and is not expected to survive. As for surrounding states, officials have announced that three other people died in Alabama, one died in Arkansas, and one died in Mississippi. The Weather Channel reports that temps are going to feel below normal for the next couple of weeks. Many of those affected are also bracing for another round of snow and rain at the end of this week.

2 Another Norfolk Southern Train Derails In Ohio

Ohio is dealing with another train derailment. A month after a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous materials derailed sparking major environmental and health concerns, folks in Clark County saw it happen again. This one occurred Saturday when 20 mostly empty train cars jumped the tracks. This latest accident also involved a Norfolk Southern train. Fortunately, there don’t seem to be any safety concerns following what happened this time. During a news conference yesterday, Fire Chief Dave Nangle said that while a HAZMAT team was called to the scene of Saturday's derailment, it was determined there were no toxic chemicals in any of the 20 cars that left the rails. He went on to say that officials with rail company Norfolk Southern were aiding local officials "every step of the way" and provided information on the contents of all the cars involved. No injuries were reported either and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says he's been in contact with Governor Mike DeWine. This comes a month after another Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous materials derailed sparking major environmental and health concerns in the town of East Palestine. Columbiana County, where the most recent accident happened, and Clark County are about 50 miles apart.

3 Murdaugh's Lawyers Say They Intend To Appeal Life Sentence

An attorney for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh says an appeal is coming soon. Jim Griffin made that remark outside the courthouse after the once prominent and wealthy South Carolina attorney was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for killing his wife and son. Griffin noted that no deal was offered by the prosecution and there were no negotiations in the case. Defense attorney Dick Harpootlian said Murdaugh’s team plans to file an appeal within 10 days. They said they must wait to receive a transcript of the trial, which they said “will take a while.” Murdaugh is beginning his life sentence for the murder of his wife and son. A judge handed the once prominent attorney two consecutive life sentences on Friday. It took the jury just 45 minutes to convict Murdaugh after a six-week trial. Prosecutors say he was about to be exposed for stealing millions from his clients and committed the murders to gain sympathy.
