1 Jimmy Carter To Receive Hospice Care
Former President Jimmy Carter has entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. In a statement, The Carter Center said that President Carter “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family” and receive hospice care instead of “additional medical intervention.” The former president and his wife, 95-year-old Rosalyn, opened the center in 1982; his work there was recognized with a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. At 98, Carter is the longest-lived American president.
2 Turkey Calls Off Earthquake Rescue Efforts
Almost two weeks after a devastating earthquake hit the region, Turkey has now ended most of their search and rescue operations. Efforts to find survivors are still underway in two provinces focused on 40 buildings, and all hope isn’t completely lost for finding additional survivors of the disaster. A couple and their 12-year-old child were rescued from the rubble on Saturday, but the child has since died. The death toll in Turkey stood at 40,689 yesterday after 47 new deaths were reported; the full death toll across Turkey and Syria is at least 46,530.
3 Another Possible Balloon East of Hawaii
According to multiple reports, the FAA notified pilots of a sighting of a large white balloon at between 40,000 and 50,000 feet roughly 600 miles east of the Hawaiian Islands. Subsequent ACARS (Aircraft Communications, Addressing and Reporting System) messages show aircraft in the area — which is normally quite busy as it sits on the route from the U.S. west coast to Hawaii — acknowledging the alert, which includes a request to report back if they spot any such object. It's unclear when the initial report of the balloon was made to FAA, but alerts about it appear to have been going out to pilots since at least 7:46 AM local time in Hawaii, or nearly 10 hours ago.
