3 Things To Know Today

1 Winter Weather Set To Snarl Holiday Travel

Planning to travel for Christmas this week? Good luck. A winter storm could seriously disrupt your plans. A powerful system will make its way across the Midwest up into the Northeast, with the Mid-Atlantic regions also affected. It's expected to bring snow, rain and high winds – and potentially, a bomb cyclone around the Great Lakes, where the heaviest snow is expected. The arctic blast will bring sub-zero temperatures and wind chills to the central U.S. Montana could see temperatures plummet to 30-below tomorrow, while the central High Plains may see wind chills anywhere between 30-and-60-below. Conditions are expected to get really nasty on Thursday with peak intensity hitting Friday and into the weekend. The best advice? Check with your carrier before heading to the airport.

2 January 6th House Committee Refers Trump And Lawyer To DOJ

The House January 6th select committee has officially referred former President Trump and his lawyer for possible prosecution. No former president has ever faced a criminal referral from Congress. It’s now up to the Justice Department whether to pursue criminal charges. While the referral is historic, there are also no teeth to it - as it's just a referral. Everything's up to the D-O-J. “That evidence has led to an overriding and straight-forward conclusion: the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, who many others followed,” the committee writes in a summary of its final report. “None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.” But there’s also Mr. Trump’s attorney, John Eastman. The election law attorney's referral was based on two counts including impeding an official government proceeding and conspiring to defraud the government. Eastman wrote a memo that outlined a plan for then-Vice President Pence to refuse to certify the 2020 presidential election. The committee said Eastman was repeatedly warned before January 6th, 2021 that his plan was illegal.

3 Supreme Court Pauses Lifting Of Title 42

The Supreme Court is pausing the lifting of Title 42, for now. Chief Justice John Roberts granted a temporary stay Monday afternoon. A number of states – 19 at last check – filed an emergency application asking the asking the High Court to keep Title 42 from ending, claiming it would lead to an overwhelming flood of immigrants. The rule allowed border agents to expel any immigrant over COVID concerns. While advocates for migrants have strongly supported the lifting of Title 42, detractors say the onslaught of illegal immigrant would swamp law enforcement as well as services for areas forced to manage the population. The Biden administration has to respond by 4pm today if they want the stay lifted.
