3 Things To Know Today

1 Biden To Sign Respect For Marriage Act Today

President Biden is expected to sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law during a celebration at the White House on Tuesday. The bipartisan bill that passed through Congress is aimed to protect marriage for LGBTQ+ and interracial couples. It also requires all states to recognize marriages legally performed in other states. Biden says the bill will ensure that LGBTQ youth will grow up knowing that they can "lead full, happy lives and build families of their own." “The president will also note that there is much more work to be done to protect the LGBTQI+ individuals across the country," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, adding that Biden will have plenty of guests at today's bill signing, including musical guests. Jean-Pierre says the events will "give peace of mind to millions of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples who will finally be guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled to.”

2 Scientists Reach Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough

Scientists have reached a nuclear fusion breakthrough that could be a step forward in increasing clean energy sources. Scientists at a research facility in California created a nuclear reaction which the US Department of Energy will officially announce the achievement later today. Researchers have been trying for decades to tap into an infinite source for clean energy, which would stop dependence on fossil fuels. Successfully recreating nuclear fusion would be replicating the same fusion that powers the sun. The idea? To create energy that would power our lives…but that’s a way off. “It’s about what it takes to boil 10 kettles of water,” says Jeremy Chittenden, co-director of the Centre for Inertial Fusion Studies at Imperial College in London. “In order to turn that into a power station, we need to make a larger gain in energy – we need it to be substantially more.” How far away is that? Perhaps a couple of decades, but this means it can happen.

3 Biden Pushing For Whelan Release

If you’re one of those upset that that the Biden administration hasn’t done more to bring Paul Whelan home, the White House hears you. Securing the release of ex-Marine Paul Whelan from a Russian prison is a top priority for the President. That's according to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. During a press briefing, Sullivan said U.S. officials are working to come up with a deal with Russia to free Whelan, who has been detained in the country since 2018. Sullivan said officials have had substantive talks with Whelan's family and are set to "have engagement" with the Russian federation this week. “I won’t say more about it because we’re trying to keep that in sensitive channels, but that’s the timetable,” he offered. “We have had regular engagement, of course, along the way, and the next conversation at a high level will take place this week.”
