3 Things To Know Today

1 Iranian Reporter Goes After American Soccer Player At Press Conference

Sure, relations between the US and Iran might be frosty, but now the head coach of the US men's soccer team is apologizing for a controversial social media post…that the team itself had nothing to do with. The US Soccer Federation posted a picture of the Iranian flag over the weekend without the emblem of the Islamic Republic in a move to show "support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights." It was later replaced with the ‘proper’ flag, but not before Iranian officials called for the US team to be "kicked out" of the World Cup. More on that in a second. With that as a backdrop, when Team USA greeted reporters in advance of today’s USA/Iran match, US team Captain Tyler Adams was trying to compliment the team’s adversaries, but an Iranian reporter took serious issue with both his pronunciation of ‘Iran’ and asked Adams – who is Black – how he felt about representing a country where there is “so much discrimination against Black people in his own borders.” Adams apologized – and took a direct, though politically correct direction with his reply.

2 Mauna Loa Eruption Underway In Hawaii

The world's largest active volcano – Mauna Loa is erupting for the first time in nearly 40 years. Located on Hawaii's Big Island, the eruption began late Sunday night. The eruption follows several weeks of increased seismic activity at and near the volcano. Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey say lava is still erupting from the summit and is overflowing from the caldera. While there's no threat to communities at this time, no one is ignoring the issue. While rivers of molten lava aren’t yet a concern for residents, officials say volcanic gas, fine ash and thin strands of volcanic glass – called Pele's Hair – could "be carried downwind." As one resident admits, everyone’s not exactly taking this in stride. “I think everybody should be a little bit concerned,” says lifelong Big Island resident Bobby Camara. “We don’t know where the flow is going, we don’t know how long it’s going to last.”

3 Biden Will Keep Pushing For Assault Weapons Ban

The White House says President Biden will keep fighting to ban assault weapons following recent mass shootings. During a briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the President believes it's important to keep the gun issue on the minds of Americans. Biden recently said he was going to try to get rid of assault weapons during the lame-duck session, despite an uphill battle to secure 10 Republican votes in the Senate. Jean-Pierre said Biden believes it's up to him to make the case for why it's critical to move forward with an assault weapons ban. “The President believes that it’s important to keep this issue — in banning assault weapons — at the front of minds of Americans,” Jean-Pierre offered. “He believes that it is — it is — it is also up to him, as President of the United States, to make the case for why it is critical to move forward.”
