1 Russians Protest, Flee Country as Military Mobilization Begins

Russia's announcement of a partial military mobilization set off protests resulting in hundreds of arrests – and a run on plane tickets out of the country . The plan to boost troop numbers in the face of Ukraine's counteroffensive was in full swing Thursday: Conscripts answered summonses, schools were commandeered for recruit intake, and there was plenty of controversy. President Vladimir Putin said the mobilization was necessary because his country is fighting not just Ukraine but the entire Western world. The military is adding 300,000 soldiers from the ranks of 25 million reservists, officials said. But some draftees said they had no military experience.

2 Storm Developing In Caribbean Could Hit U.S. Next Week

There are several storms facing potential hurricane that could pose a danger to the U.S. is developing in the Caribbean. Some early forecast models have the system gaining hurricane strength and approaching the Gulf Coast during the middle of next week. The National Hurricane Center gives it a 90% chance to grow into a tropical storm. This comes after Hurricane Fiona battered Puerto Rico for days. And speaking of Fiona, she’s expected to be a problem for Canada. As she moves north, there are 50-foot waves. As such, a rare hurricane watch has been issued by the Canadian Hurricane Center for portions of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island.

3 Texas Police Say Tip Helped Stop Shooting at High School Football Game

North Texas police are relieved that a tip stopped a potential mass shooting at a football game at Everman High School in Tarrant County last weekend. Police ended up finding the suspect and taking them into custody as they were heading to the game, according to a Facebook post from officials. Brandon Gipson and Isaac Cooper were taken into custody on Friday, September 16, after police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. Police found an AR pistol and a 60-round magazine in the vehicle. Police said it was clear that the suspects were "coming to do harm." In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 20, the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office wrote how deputies received a credible tip about the threat. Officials relayed the information to TCSO off-duty deputies and Everman police. Officials made the high-risk stop and three people were inside the car that was detained.
