1 Stocks Have Worst Day In Two Years After Bad Inflation Report

The stock market fell sharply on Tuesday after the August Consumer Price Index report was released, showing that inflation rose 0.1% even as gas prices decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,276 points, or 3.94%, while the S&P dropped 4.32% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 5.16% for the day. Tech stocks were some of the biggest losers, with Meta losing 9.4%, chipmaker Nvidia dropping 9.5%, and Unity Software sinking 13.4%. The drop wiped out almost all of the recent rally in stocks, with some experts thinking the markets could drop back to the lows the markets hit in mid-June. While headline inflation rose only 0.1%, core inflation rose 0.6% and on a year-over-year basis, inflation was 8.3%. Economists had been expecting a drop of 0.1% for overall inflation.

2 House Oversight Committee Requests Written Certification From Trump That He’s Returned All Documents

The National Archives confirmed to CBS News on Tuesday that it had received a letter from the US House Oversight Committee urging the Archives to “seek from former President Trump a written certification that he has surrendered all presidential records or classified materials.” The letter was written by the Committee’s chair, Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York. “In light of revelations that Mr. Trump’s representatives misled investigators about his continued possession of government property,” Rep. Maloney wrote, “I am deeply concerned that sensitive presidential records may remain out of the control and custody of the US government.” Maloney acknowledged that Trump is under no legal obligation to provide any certification.

3 One Person Injured As Package Explodes At Northeastern University

A staff member at Northeastern University was injured Tuesday when a package he was opening detonated, according to a spokesperson for the university. The 45-year-old man suffered hand injuries when the package, delivered to Holmes Hall on campus, exploded just after 7 p.m. Boston Police’s bomb squad and Boston Emergency Services arrived at the scene to investigate, and the building was evacuated as a precaution. Federal law enforcement officials say that authorities don’t know the motivation behind the incident. Just before 10 p.m., university police tweeted that the “scene at Holmes Hall is currently contained.”
