1 Officials Confirm Nine People Injured In Cincinnati Mass Shooting

Nine people were wounded when shooters opened fire in a crowd in Cincinnati’s Over-The-Rhine early Sunday morning. All of the victims were treated and released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, ranging in age from 24 to 47. There were no fatalities in the shooting. No arrests have been made, but police say they’re looking for “at least two” people who fired weapons during the incident. Police say that just after 1:30 a.m. officers went to the corner in the entertainment district of the city to disperse a large crowd, and shots were fired after a physical altercation. After the shooting, the large crowd remained at the site, which police say made it difficult for medics to reach the victims. Mayor Aftab Pureval credited the quick response of police on the scene in a press conference Sunday, and said, “The gun violence is so inappropriate. People can’t solve their difference without reaching for a gun.”

2 Senate Votes On Inflation Reduction Act

The U.S. Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act on Sunday after a 16-hour “vote-a-rama” with a party-line vote of 51-50, moving the legislation over to the House where it’s expected to pass quickly, then head to President Joe Biden’s desk. No timing has been announced for a vote on the measure in the Democratic-controlled House. Included in the bill are measures to boost job creation, raise taxes on large corporations and the wealthy, allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug costs, an expansion of the Affordable Care Act, and an investment in combating climate change. The plan would also reduce federal budget deficits by $102 billion over 10 years. During the process, Republicans successfully stripped a $35 per month cap on out-of-pocket insulin costs for patients who have private insurance. That means the high price of insulin can keep going up. Seven Republicans voted with all 50 Democrats to keep the insulin cap in the bill, but three more Republican votes were needed to succeed. The bill as passed kept the $35 per month cap for co-pays under Medicare.

3 Zelensky Lashes Out At Russian Shelling Of Ukrainian Nuke Plant

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that renewed Russian shelling had damaged three radiation sensors and injured a worker at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the second attack in two days on Europe’s largest nuclear facility. Zelensky called the Saturday night shelling “Russian nuclear terror” that he believes warrants more international sanctions. The Russian-installed authority of the area tells a different story, saying that it was Ukraine that hit the site with a multiple rocket launcher. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Saturday that the attack “underlines the very real risk of a nuclear disaster.”
