1 Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe In Grave Condition After Being Shot
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is reportedly in grave condition after being shot during a political event in Nara, Japan. The 67-year-old former prime minister was giving a campaign speech on the streets of Nara this morning when a shot rang out and Abe fell to the ground. He was given CPR on scene before being transported to a local hospital. Guns are tightly regulated in Japan and according to local officials, the shooter – who is in custody – used a homemade gun. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says the shooting of Mr. Abe "is not a forgivable act." Addressing the nation from Tokyo, Kishida said Japan is "trying to comprehend this tough situation." The U.S. Ambassador to Japan is also reacting to the apparent attempted assassination. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel says the American government and people are "saddened and shocked" by the events and praying for Abe and his family.
2 Brittney Griner Pleads Guilty
WNBA star Brittney Griner's has offered a guilty plea – but it’s not believed she did so because she’s actually guilty. In fact, it’s believed to be paving the way for potential negotiations to bring her home – via prisoner swap. Griner was accused of having under a gram of cannabis oil in her luggage when she was arrested at the airport in Moscow back in February. In addressing the court, the 31-year-old said she “didn't intend to commit a crime” and “was just careless packing her bags.” But again, just because she said that – it doesn’t mean it’s truth. Griner’s guilty plea simply moves the ball forward to hopefully get her home. Elizabeth Rood, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, says the U.S. is doing all it can – and delivered a letter to Griner from President Biden, who is promising commitment to get all Americans home from overseas detention.
