1 Report: Responding Officers Had Firepower, Shields To Confront Uvalde Gunman

A new report on the police response to last month’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas has revealed that the first officers who responded were equipped with rifles and at least one shield as well as a tool to breach the room where the shooter was. Still, they did not try to confront the gunman. According to the “Texas Tribune,” surveillance footage shows the officers had access to ballistic shields along with at least two rifles within 20 minutes of the shooting starting at Robb Elementary. So why didn’t they go in? Officers say they had no clear orders. But also during this time, school police chief Pete Arredondo reportedly called a dispatcher and said he did not have the firepower to approach the shooter. The incident lasted 77 minutes before a Border Patrol team finally entered the classroom and killed the gunman.

2 Russia Can't Guarantee American Vets Won't Face Death Penalty

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman says he can't guarantee two U.S. military veterans captured in Ukraine won't face the death penalty. In an interview with NBC News, Dmitry Peskov says the men were involved in illegal activities and firing at Russian troops in Ukraine. He's calling for them to be “held accountable” and “punished.” When asked if the men - Alexander Drueke and Andy Huynh - would “face the same fate” as two Britons recently sentenced to death for their efforts to help Ukrainians, Peskov offered, “It depends on the investigation.” As for the third American whose gone missing in Ukraine, he’s now been identified as Marine veteran Heeson Kim. He was last heard from April 23rd and 24th. While the others have been confirmed as being held by Russians, Kim is still missing.

3 Biden Says He's Close To Making Decisions On Student Debt, Federal Gas Tax

President Biden is confirming he's close to making a decision on student debt. He said so while speaking to reporters on the beach in Delaware. Biden also said extending the pause on student loan payments is also being considered. The current pause runs through August 31st. But that’s not all he’s got on his mind – Biden’s also considering a suspension of the federal gas tax – which would save Americans about 18-cents per gallon. At last check the nationwide average is just under $5 per gallon. Biden noted, “I hope to have a decision based on the data I'm looking for by the end the week.” While that might sound good to most of us, Larry Summers, a Treasury Secretary to President Bill Clinton, says it’d be a mistake. On NBC’s “Meet the Press” over the weekend, Summers noted “I’m no fan of the gas tax holiday. I think that`s kind of a gimmick, and eventually you have to reverse it.”
