1 Senators Unveil Bi-Partisan Gun Deal

A bi-partisan group of senators says they've reached a framework deal on gun control. The agreement includes enhanced review for gun buyers under the age of 21 and incentives for states to enact "red flag" laws. Senator Chris Murphy took to Twitter yesterday to lay out other provisions of the deal, which include: More rigorous process for background checks on people between 18 and 21 years old, Billions in funding for mental health and school safety, The first-ever federal law against gun trafficking. The breakthrough agreement was a collaborative effort of 20 senators – half of which were Republicans – whose work was quickly praised by President Biden. While legislative language needs to get worked out, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is already showing his support for the deal. The Kentucky Republican applauded the group headed by Murphy and Texas Republican John Cornyn on their agreement. McConnell also stated that the proposal shows "the value of dialogue and cooperation."

2 White Nationalist Group Stopped From Carrying Out Pride Parade Riot

While the nation marks the sixth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre, officials in Idaho say 31 people linked to the white nationalist group Patriot Front were arrested over a planned riot at the Pride in the Park event in Coeur d'Alene. Chief Lee White of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office says it was clear what the group came to do. Among other things, the suspects were wearing masks and carrying shields when a U-Haul truck they were in was stopped. Apparently, police had been made aware of multiple groups who planned to disrupt the event in recent days. "It is clear to us based on the gear that the individuals had with them, the stuff they had in the possession and in the U-Haul with them along with paperwork that was seized from them,” Chief White explains. “That they came to riot downtown.” All 31 have since been released on bond.

The House committee investigating the U.S. Capitol attack will hold its next hearing this morning – the first of three this week. Republican Senator Liz Cheney has said today's hearing will focus on former President Donald Trump's "massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information" about the 2020 election. On Wednesday, Cheney says viewers will learn that senior leadership in the Department of Justice and White House threatened to resign, confronting Trump in the Oval Office. Then, on Thursday, the hearing will revolve around the former president's efforts to "pressure" former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election. There will be more hearings, they just haven’t been scheduled as yet.
