1 Matthew McConaughey Makes Passionate Plea For Gun Reform

Matthew McConaughey may be known for making people laugh and smile, but yesterday he choked back tears as he made a strong pitch for new gun safety regulations after the deadly mass shooting in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas. After speaking with lawmakers Monday evening, McConaughey met with President Biden at the White House yesterday. Stepping up to the podium, McConaughey was clear that "this time, it seems something is different." In his 20-minutes of remarks, he got personal – and passionate. “These are reasonable, practical, tactical regulations to our nation, states, communities, schools and homes,” he said. “Responsible gun owners are fed up with the Second Amendment being abused and hijacked by some deranged individuals. These regulations are not a step back – they're a step forward for a civil society and, and the Second Amendment.” He didn't take questions after his remarks.

2 Homeland Security Warns Of "Heightened Threat" This Summer

The Department of Homeland Security is warning Americans of a "heightened threat environment" this summer. There aren’t any specific details, but a new bulletin from the National Terrorism Advisory System does say a number recent incidents have highlighted the “dynamic” and “complex” nature of the threat environment. It cautioned "several high profile events could be exploited to justify acts of violence against a range of possible targets" in the coming months. Like what? It says potential targets include “public gatherings, faith-based institutions, schools, racial and religious minorities, government facilities and personnel, U.S. critical infrastructure, the media, and perceived ideological opponents.”

3 CDC Raises Monkeypox Alert Level, Recommends Masks During Travel

The CDC is raising its alert level for monkeypox. The health agency raised the alert level for the disease to level two on Monday and recommended that Americans avoid contact with sick people and sick animals – especially those with skin lesions. For the record, the highest level alert — level 3 — would caution against nonessential travel. The CDC said monkeypox cases have been reported in North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia – one-thousand, 19 cases worldwide, so far. Symptoms begin as flu-like but soon include swelling of lymph nodes and a rash across the face and body. Painful lesions then form on the rash areas, leaving severe scarring.
