1 Biden: Too Many Places In U.S. Have Become "Killing Fields, Battlefields"

President Biden says too many places in America have become killing fields and battlefields. During a primetime address from the White House, Biden said it's past time to do something about rampant gun violence. He cited the deadly mass shootings in Buffalo, Tulsa and Uvalde, Texas, just in the past three weeks. He argued that the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution is "not absolute." He said the issue is not about taking away anyone's rights, it's about protecting children and families. With that in mind, Biden is calling on Congress to pass "rational, common sense" measures to curb rampant gun violence. "Enough, enough, enough," he said, adding that Biden argued that “too many places in America have become killing fields and battlefields.” As part of that The President called for a ban on military-style assault weapons, along with passage of expanded gun background checks. He also expressed support for red flag laws to alert authorities about potentially dangerous individuals. No matter what, Biden said, the age for gun purchases “should be raised to 21.” He also argued that the U.S. must do more to address a growing mental health crisis in the U.S. Biden called on 10 Republican senators to join Democrats in passing gun legislation. The 50-50 Senate needs 60-votes to move any legislation forward.

2 HHS To Investigate FDA's Handling Of Baby Formula Recall

The FDA's response to a recall at a baby formula facility in Michigan will be the subject of a new investigation. The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the probe regarding the Abbott Nutrition plant in the southern part of the state. The probe will focus on the FDA's actions before the recall in February – according to various reports, the flag was first throw last fall. That includes policies when it comes to facility inspections. This comes as the White House still can’t answer why President Biden didn’t know how bad things were before April. While the White House says actions were taking then, Biden says he didn’t know until April. CNN’s Jake Tapper positively grilled White House economic adviser Brian Deese about that fact. While he didn’t exactly get a clear answer, it seems fate stepped in – as the camera Deese was speaking to fell over.

3 Scripps Spelling Bee Has Historic Ending

As the Scripps National Spelling Bee returned to full, in person competition this year, some history was made – as 14-year-old Texas girl has won the first-ever spell-off. Harini Logan of San Antonio won last night near Washington, DC. Logan received a trophy and a 50-thousand-dollar check after defeating 12-year-old Vikram Raju in a spelling duel to see how many words the contestants can spell correctly within 90 seconds. Harini correctly spelled 21 of the 26 words. “We activated the spell-off because it was the best chance to show the extent of these spellers’ preparation,” Bee executive director Dr. J. Michael Durnil said. “Clearly, they demonstrated their deep capacity for the competition.” As for Logan, she’s just thrilled to have won. "Just so surreal,” she offered. “This is such a dream.”
