2 Biden Invokes Defense Production Act Over Baby Formula Shortage

President Joe Biden announced yesterday that he was invoking the Defense Production Act to help give parents some relief from the baby formula shortage. It’s been reported that over 40 percent of the supply of baby formula nationwide is out of stock due to the shortage. The Defense Production Act declaration requires suppliers of ingredients to send them to key manufacturers of baby formula before any other customers in order to help boost domestic production. Biden also announced the launch of Operation Fly Formula, which directs the Health and Human Services Department and the Department of Agriculture to use Defense Department aircraft to pick up infant formula from overseas that meets U.S. health and safety standards to alleviate the shortage. The U.S. produces 98% of the baby formula American parents buy, which is made by four manufacturers. The shortage of baby formula was induced in part by the shut down of an Abbott Nutrition plant in Michigan due to bacterial contamination.
