3 Things To Know Today

1 Russia May Go Nuclear As Allies Limit Access To SWIFT

As the tension between Ukraine and Russia ramps up – and the international noose tightens around Russian President Vladimir Putin – representatives from countries are set to meet in Belarus today. Not that the talks are expected to result in anything positive. On that note, Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield – the U.S. Ambassador to the UN – says Putin put his country's nuclear department on high alert even though he's invading a country with no nukes. Greenfield said it will take courage from fellow UN members, but Russia must be held accountable for its actions. To that end, the UN Security Council has voted to call for a special emergency meeting that will happen today. In the meantime, the EU is set to finance a large amount of "lethal assistance" to aid Ukraine as it attempts to fight of a Russian invasion.

2 Trump Says Russia Wouldn't Invade If He Was In Office

A week after praising Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “genius,” former President Trump says things in Ukraine would be different if he was in charge. Speaking at Conservative Political Action Conference (or CPAC), Trump added that when he was in office the U.S. was looked at as a strong and smart country, but now the country is viewed as a "stupid country." Not only that, Trump’s remarks, which went on for well over an hour, saw him claim that jails from around the world are being "emptied into our country" and the US was being "poisoned" by "illegal aliens." As part of that, attendees also got a pretty solid understanding of Trump’s political plans – as in, it appears he will run again. "We did it twice,” he offered. And we'll do it again." And it would appear the conservative establishment is behind him. According to a straw poll, Trump’s a favorite to get the GOP nod. Of the more than 25-hundred responses, nearly 60% backed Trump.

3 CDC Updates Mask Recommendation Guidelines

It’s official! The CDC is loosening mask recommendations. The CDC now says masks only need to be worn when a community is in the high level – though immunocompromised people are recommended to wear masks when a location is in the medium tier. What’s your tier? Find it at CDC.gov. Essentially, the new guidance from the CDC saying 70% of the nation can stop wearing masks. The timing of the shift has happened just in time for Congress as the mask mandate is done on Capitol Hill. As lawmakers return today, covering up will be optional...and that includes for President Biden's State of the Union address tomorrow. Still, those attending must still be tested for COVID. Coronavirus cases are down 90-percent from six weeks ago.
