3 Things To Know Today

1 Biden Cuts Off Russian Government, Plans Troop Movements

President Biden says Russia has “clearly started” an invasion of Ukraine. This, as Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into two regions of eastern Ukraine Monday night. Speaking at the White House, Biden said Putin “is crafting a rationale to take more Ukrainian territory by force.” He called it a “flagrant violation of international law” and also unveiled a round of tough financial sanctions against Russia: targeting Russian financial institutions, the country's sovereign debt, and Russian oligarchs and their families. Putin has declared the affected Ukrainian regions “independent” and said his troops would be acting as so-called peacekeepers. Biden called the claims bizarre. Biden has also announced additional U.S. military movements to help strengthen Baltic allies in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

2 Guilty Verdict In Arbery Federal Hate Crimes Trial

The three white men previously found guilty of killing Ahmaud Arbery have now been found guilty in the federal hate crimes trial connected to Arbery's death in Georgia. The men – Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael, and their neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan – were already convicted of chasing and shooting Arbery two years ago while he was jogging and they're serving life sentences. Only Bryan had a chance at parole. Though that’s evaporated now as well – as the hate crimes charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. In addition, however, they all now face additional sentences and heavy fines.

3 Investigations Underway In Two Military Helicopter Crashes

Investigators are trying to figure out why a military-contracted helicopter crashed near a Navy facility in Hawaii. It was taking part in a training operation yesterday when something went wrong, killing all four civilian employees on board. Officials say the helicopter had just retrieved an object from the ocean and was trying to drop it on the ground when it crashed. Witnesses think there may have been a problem with the cable being used. Meanwhile, the Utah National Guard is providing new details about how two helicopters crashed yesterday morning during a training exercise south of Salt Lake City. Spokesman Jared Jones says one of the Black Hawks was landing in the Mineral Basin area and kicked up fresh snow that obstructed the view of the pilot. The pilot then lost track of the ground and crashed. Portions of the rotor blade from the first chopper broke off and struck the second chopper, damaging that aircraft as it was landing. No one was seriously hurt.
